SUMMARY: OUTCOMES & OBJECTIVES

  • The City of Boston seeks to reimplement a public data explorer site to provide "self-service" data reporting for stakeholders including city departments, universities & researchers, and residents of the City.
  • Doing so will not only help stakeholders pull data for grant proposals and other research, it will provide a public benefit inline with the City's commitment to open data access.
  • This proposal outlines a complete solution based on off-the-shelf components, customization to the City's specific needs, integration of custom data and embedded on the city's website.

PART 1: CUSTOM AREA CREATOR

  • A simple user interface for drawing arbitrary polygon shapes to pull data on fully detailed maps (including roads, landmarks, etc)
  • Upload shapefiles of pre-generated areas users can select, including neighborhoods, precincts, wards
  • This capability is currently part of eImpact software for logged-in users
  • This scope of work will involve customization for a publicly available website with anonymous users

PART 2: DATA PICKER

  • A user menu of data points to pull, customized for Boston's specific requirements
  • Data points to include Boston's custom data (see section below)
  • Historical trend data from 1970 to present

PART 3: DATA ANALYSIS ENGINE

  • User-defined areas and data point selections will return valid data based on eImpact's backend technology.
  • Data estimation methods will be used to compute results for shapes overlapping census blocks and other standard geographies
  • Outputs will be generated on-the-fly within typical loading and processing times

PART 4: SHARE & EXPORT

  • Returned results, in interactive graph and table formats, will be shareable via direct link, embed code, or printable PDF (with pagination)
  • Individual tables may also be exported to spreadsheet format
